Freeze-dried, dehydrated or baked: what's the difference in pet treats?
The word on the front of the pack describes how the water was taken out. That one step changes the texture, the ingredient list and often the price.
Freeze-dried
The food is frozen, then placed under a vacuum so the ice turns straight into vapor. Very little heat is involved. What's left is light, dry and porous, so it crumbles easily and soaks water back up fast.
Because the process needs no binders, freeze-dried treats are often a single ingredient. The equipment is slow and expensive to run, which is why these treats tend to cost more per ounce.
Dehydrated or air-dried
Warm air is moved over the food for hours until most of the water has evaporated. The result is denser and chewier than freeze-dried, more like jerky. Ingredient lists are often short here too.
Baked
Baked treats start as a dough or batter, so they need flour or another starch plus something to hold it together. They're cooked at high oven temperatures into a crunchy biscuit. Ingredient lists are usually the longest of the three.
Side by side
| Freeze-dried | Dehydrated | Baked | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How water is removed | Frozen, then vacuum | Warm air over hours | Oven heat |
| Texture | Light, crisp, crumbly | Dense, chewy | Hard, crunchy |
| Typical ingredient list | Often one ingredient | Short | Longer, includes starch |
| Good for | Training bits, meal toppers | Longer chewing | Everyday biscuits |
How to choose
- If you want to know exactly what your pet is eating, look for a single-ingredient treat, whichever way it's dried.
- If you train with treats or have a small dog or a cat, freeze-dried pieces break into tiny rewards without a knife.
- If your dog likes to chew for a while, dehydrated treats last longer.
Two things worth knowing
Freeze-drying removes water but it isn't cooking. Some freeze-dried treats are made from raw meat or fish and some from cooked. The label or the brand can tell you which.
Moisture is the enemy of any dried treat. Close the jar or reseal the bag after every use and keep it somewhere cool and dry.
